FTPie Release Notes

Version 2026.11.1

Sharing

  • •A short link, with a password if you want. Share a file and the dialog shows its storage link with Copy link. Shorten URL turns it into a short ftpie.link link that opens the file where it is, and Add a password does the same behind a password. The password is checked in the recipient's browser, so FTPie can't read what you share, and a forgotten password can't be recovered. "Use the storage link instead" goes back, and both links keep working
  • •One link for several files. Select files or folders and choose Share: you get each item's own link, with Copy on every row and Copy all at the top. One short link for all makes a single page on ftpie.link that lists them, each with an Open button, with or without a password
  • •Share a screenshot or a note itself. Get link in the screenshot tool and in Notes puts the screenshot, or the note as a read-only page, on ftpie.link, with or without a password. The address shows before anything is made, and nothing goes up until you choose Create link or Create with password. Share beside it still puts a copy on your own storage
  • •Links tidy up after themselves. An FTPie link is deleted after 30 days without a visit, and a link made on the trial after 7 days at most. Main menu > Shared links lists FTPie links and storage links together, with filters for each, and Revoke stops an FTPie link for everyone at once
  • •FTPie mail: email with nothing to set up. In Settings > Email, FTPie mail (no setup) sends share emails and alerts from ftpie.link. The mail doesn't carry your email address, so recipients can't reply to it, and it is in English unless you tick "Write share emails in FTPie's language". If you already send through your own Gmail, Outlook or SMTP, nothing changes for you
  • •A simpler share dialog. One link, Copy link first, Show QR code and Send by email underneath. When FTPie has to upload first, for a screenshot, a recording or a file from your PC, the upload runs inside the dialog with its progress in the link box, instead of in a separate transfer window. Share emails now say Open on every item
  • •Quick Share asks before it uploads a file you already have. Sharing a file from your PC, or from a storage that can't make public links of its own such as an FTP or SFTP server, now says what goes up and to which storage, with Change to pick another. Cancel uploads nothing
  • •FTPie links and FTPie mail come with FTPie Pro and the trial. The short ftpie.com links that Shorten URL made in earlier versions keep working

The file browser

  • •A toolbar that shows what you can do. With nothing selected, the New menu above your files is gone, and what you used most in it is on the toolbar as buttons: New folder, Upload (on every storage but My Computer) and Transfer here, which brings files from any of your storages into the folder you are in. Each button shows only where it works, so Backup, Scheduled Transfers, Recent and the list of drives no longer show a New menu with nothing in it you could use. Home shows Add storage and Reorder storages, and My Computer and every folder on your PC show Show in Explorer by name, not just its icon. New text files, documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and Upload from URL, are in the right-click New menu as before
  • •Cleaner column headers in the Details view. The grey band is gone: the headers are shorter, sit on the list's own background with a thin line under them, and line up with the names, dates and sizes below. The column you sort by is in bold, with the same arrow as the Sort button. Point at the headers and thin lines show where the columns meet, so you can see where to drag to resize one

Opening files

  • •Open shows the app it will use. Right-click a file and Open carries the icon of the app a double-click opens it in: the one you picked with "Always use this app", or FTPie's own viewer for the type, such as the PDF viewer for a PDF. When FTPie would ask you first, Open has no icon. An encrypted file opens the decrypt dialog whichever app you pick, so it shows none
  • •Open with lists the apps you use. Open with now lists the apps you have opened that type of file with, the last one first, so opening it in another of them takes one click. "Choose another app…" at the bottom opens the full list as before. A program you picked with "Choose an app on your PC" is remembered too. The first time you start this version, the list is filled from your Recent files
  • •Files open without holding up the window. A double-click used to look through every program installed for the file's type twice, the second time while the window waited. FTPie now picks the app in the background, in a few milliseconds. The Open with list opens faster too: each program's name and icon is read once and remembered

Music and video

  • •Videos play smoothly. The video player drew every frame with the processor instead of the graphics card, so a 60 fps video showed about 14 frames a second and kept a processor core busy. After you watched a video, the rest of FTPie also stayed on that slower drawing until you restarted it. Videos now play on the graphics card, as Windows' own player does: in our tests 30 fps videos play every frame, and 60 fps videos went from 14 to over 50 frames a second. Everyone moves to the graphics card with this version. If a video shows up wrong on your PC, Video Decode Mode in Settings > Apps set to Software brings the old way back, and now only while a video is open
  • •A playlist beside the video. When a folder has more than one video, the video player lists them in a panel on the right, with the one playing marked, so the next one you want is a click away. Long names wrap onto a second line, so recordings that differ only by their time are easy to tell apart. The playlist button next to the playback speed hides or shows the panel, and FTPie remembers your choice
  • •Music bars that dance to the song. The strip under the song title in the music player is now a row of thin bars side by side, like the spectrum analyzers of the classic desktop players: they jump up on every beat, fall back, and leave a small cap hanging at each peak for a moment before it drops. They follow what you are hearing, where before they moved in small steps and ran a little ahead of the sound, and they adjust to the recording, so a quiet song moves as much as a loud one
  • •The play button pulses with the beat. A soft glow around the play and pause button swells with the bass, and a faint ring leaves the button on each kick drum. Before, the circle behind the button hardly moved and sat mostly under the button. After a pause it now fades back in, instead of appearing half a second late

Settings

  • •Settings, sorted into groups. The list of settings pages is grouped under Files, Automation, Security and Tools, so you can find a page by what it is about. Notes, Screenshot and Screen recorder have their own places under Tools instead of sitting folded away under Extras, and License sits on its own at the end. The list now uses the whole height of the window and only scrolls when the window is too short for it

Recent files

  • •Open a recent file by clicking its name. One click on a file's name opens it, the same as the open button over its icon. Before, the name only selected the row, and opening it took a double-click

FTP, FTPS and SFTP

  • •Hidden files show up. Files such as .htaccess and folders such as .well-known are listed on every FTP server, and copies, moves and backups include them. To keep them out of the file list, turn off "Show hidden files and folders" in Settings for FTP or SFTP; copies, moves and backups take them either way
  • •Copy and Move take everything in a folder. Hidden files and folders, such as a project's .git, go along from every storage, Scheduled Transfers included. If FTPie may not read a folder, the transfer names it among its errors and a Move keeps the original
  • •Folders behind a symbolic link open. A link to a folder, such as the www folder of cPanel hosting, opens like the folder itself. Deleting a link removes the link and leaves what it points to, on FTP and SFTP
  • •Go to any folder on the server. Type a path in the address bar, with .. to go above your home folder, or use the new folder button at the top level of an FTP or SFTP storage and type a path such as /var/www. Wherever you open a folder the server won't show you, on FTP or SFTP, FTPie says so in plain words
  • •Names with accents and other alphabets. Files such as zażółć.txt and 日本語.txt list, open and upload under their own names on FTP servers that don't announce UTF-8
  • •FTPS certificates that Windows trusts are accepted without a question, so scheduled transfers and backups keep running when a server renews its certificate. A self-signed certificate is asked about once, as before
  • •Faster uploads into big folders. In our tests, 200 small files went into a folder of 2,000 files in about a third of the time. A copy into a big folder you haven't opened reads its list only once, and the first action after a pause starts sooner
  • •Backups leave symbolic links out on SFTP, as on FTP. A link to a folder, such as www, is not backed up a second time, and a link that leads nowhere no longer stops a compressed backup
  • •Several files at once on every FTP server. FTP accounts move several files at a time, up to the number in Settings > FTP (five unless you change it), and each account can set its own under Max Connections when you add or edit it. When a server accepts fewer connections, FTPie works with the ones it gets straight away and every file arrives

Fixes

  • •The Markdown editor's tabs fit their labels in every language. In languages with longer words, such as Russian or Swedish, the Preview label ran out of its tab and over the toolbar. The Write and Preview tabs now grow to fit their labels, and so do the Markdown and WYSIWYG tabs at the bottom and the File and URL tabs when you insert an image
  • •Clicking a column header sorts the way the Sort button does. Sorting from a header mixed folders in with files, was forgotten when you opened another folder, and left the Sort button showing the old order. A header now changes the same setting as the Sort button: folders stay first, the order is kept, and the header and the button always agree. Click the sorted column again to reverse it. A new column starts with names A to Z, dates newest first and sizes largest first
  • •Big files go from SFTP and FTP to Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox. Copying a file bigger than the chunk size in Settings > Transfers (50 MB unless you changed it) from an SFTP server to Google Drive failed with "Invalid request. There were 52440755 byte(s) (or more) in the request body". FTPie sends a big file in parts, and each part it read from the SFTP server came out a few kilobytes longer than the part it announced, so Google Drive refused it. OneDrive and Dropbox refused the same parts, and an FTP or FTPS server as the source had the same problem. Each part is now exactly its size, and pausing and resuming such a copy goes on from where it stopped. The fix covers every storage that takes big files in parts
  • •A right-click no longer starts a drag. Right-clicking a file and then clicking it, without moving the mouse, could start dragging it. A drag now starts only from a press on the file itself, and opening a context menu ends any press that came before it
  • •"Always use this app" keeps working after Windows changes a program's registration. If you set a program to always open a type of file and Windows later stopped listing it for that type, FTPie quietly stopped using it. As long as the program is still where it was on your PC, FTPie now opens your files with it
  • •Deleting a folder that holds a symbolic link removes the link and finishes. What the link points to stays where it is
  • •An upload over a hidden file asks first, like any other file
  • •A download the FTP server refuses is reported as failed, and the transfer goes on with the next files
  • •Downloads keep names with ".part" in them. A file such as video.part1.rar, downloaded to your PC from a server or a cloud, was saved as video1.rar, and a file in a folder named like old.parts did not arrive. Both keep their names now
  • •A download never replaces a file you didn't choose to replace. Windows takes Photo.JPG and photo.jpg for the same name, so downloading photo.jpg into a folder that held Photo.JPG put Photo.JPG in the Recycle Bin without asking, and two files on a server that differ only in capital letters ended up as one. FTPie now keeps the file that is there and says why the other one was not saved
  • •Empty files download from S3-compatible storage. An empty file, such as a Python package's __init__.py, failed with "Bad Request" on some S3-compatible servers, MinIO among them, so a backup that held one could not be restored
  • •A compressed backup that cannot download a file says which. A compressed backup of a server or a cloud names each file it could not download and why, instead of "Download transfer failed with some invalid items"
  • •A busy error log no longer closes FTPie. If another program, or another copy of FTPie, had FTPie's error log open at the moment FTPie wrote to it, FTPie could close with "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". This happened most often when FTPie started while another copy of it had stopped responding. FTPie now waits a moment for the log and carries on either way

Thank you for using FTPie!
